Mayor Mike Miller and members of the city council
welcome you to the official website for the City of
Rockwood. If you are a resident, officials encourage you
to become an active participant in the city’s
activities, as they strive to improve the quality of
life for all citizens. If you are a visitor, city
leaders welcome you to what they consider “a special
place to live, visit, work, play and raise families.”
Rockwood is situated in beautiful Roane County, between
the cities of Crossville and Knoxville. The town is
easily accessible from Interstate 40, and Highways 27
and 70. The City of Rockwood was actually established
after the Civil War when Union officer and geologist
John T. Wilder discovered iron on Walden Ridge. He
returned with northern industrialists to begin mining
and milling operations in 1868. Rockwood began as a
company town serving the employees of the Roane Iron
Company. The town gets its name from the company's first
president, William O. Rockwood. As the company and the
town prospered, other businesses moved into the area,
thus expanding and diversifying Roane County's economic
framework. Although things have changed drastically
since the early days of mining, officials are proud of
the many things the small town has to offer to its
citizens and those visiting the area.
The City of Rockwood adheres to all Title VI
Federal Requirements
Title VI and Race, Color and National Origin
Discrimination
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects people
from discrimination based on race, color or national
origin in programs or activities that receive Federal
financial assistance. Title VI states that:
No person in the United States shall, on the ground of
race, color, or national origin, be excluded from
participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be
subjected to discrimination under any program or
activity receiving Federal financial assistance.
Programs and activities that receive Federal financial
assistance from the United States Department of
Education (ED) are covered by Title VI. ED maintains an
Office for Civil Rights, with 10 regional offices and a
headquarters office in Washington, D.C., to enforce
Title VI.
